GIRLS ON FILM: "La Vie En Rose" The Life of Édith Piaf

This looks good. Great period piece. And I love Paris so......I love the song too. I first heard it covered by Grace Jones back in the 80's and loved it ever since. If you don't have it. GET IT! And Go see this movie. I believe it is showing in NYC (Ofcourse) Go see it and comment. I am going asap! Also find her music. It is REAL FRENCH MUSIC. The kind of stuff you listen to on Sundays during brunch sipping on Mimosa's being real fabulous!

La Vie En Rose is the title in English-speaking territories for La Môme (French for The Kid), a 2007 French language movie directed by Olivier Dahan about singer Édith Piaf, starring Marion Cotillard as Piaf. The movie premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Co-stars include film veteran Gérard Depardieu, Sylvie Testud, Emmanuelle Seigner, Clotilde Courau newcomer Jean-Pierre Martins and respected character actor Pascal Greggory.

The film presents a fractured and largely non-linear series of key events from the life of Édith Piaf. Although scenes often jump back and forth across decades, parts of her childhood take up much of the first part, and the movie ends with her death, and the performance of what is perhaps her signature song,

*Note: Film is presented in foreign language with subtitles.

From the slums of Paris to the limelight of New York, Edith Piaf's life was a battle to sing and survive, live and love. Raised in poverty, Edith's magical voice and her passionate romances and friendships with the greatest names of the period--Yves Montand, Jean Cocteau, Charles Aznavour, Marlene Dietrich, Marcel Cerdan and others--made her a star all around the world. But in her audacious attempt to tame her tragic destiny, the Little Sparrow--her nickname--flew so high she could not fail to burn her wings.

Edith Piaf (December 19, 1915–October 11, 1963) was one of France's most beloved singers and became a national icon. Her singing reflected her tragic life, with her specialty being the poignant ballad performed in a heartbreaking voice. Today she is still remembered and revered as one of the greatest singers of France.

Edith Piaf is almost universally regarded as France's greatest popular singer. Still revered as an icon decades after her death, "the Sparrow" served as a touchstone for virtually every chansonnier, male or female, who followed her. Her greatest strength wasn't so much her technique, or the purity of her voice, but the raw, passionate power of her singing. (Given her extraordinarily petite size, audiences marveled all the more at the force of her vocals.) Her style epitomized that of the classic French chanson: highly emotional, even melodramatic, with a wide, rapid vibrato that wrung every last drop of sentiment from a lyric. She preferred melancholy, mournful material, singing about heartache, tragedy, poverty, and the harsh reality of life on the streets; much of it was based to some degree on her real-life experiences, written specifically for her by an ever-shifting cast of songwriters. Her life was the stuff of legend, starting with her dramatic rise from uneducated Paris street urchin to star of international renown. Along the way, she lost her only child at age three, fell victim to substance abuse problems, survived three car accidents, and took a seemingly endless parade of lovers, one of whom perished in a plane crash on his way to visit her. Early in her career, she chose men who could help and instruct her; later in life, with her own status secure, she helped many of her lovers in their ambitions to become songwriters or singers, then dropped them once her mentorship had served its purpose. By the time cancer claimed her life at age 47, Piaf had recorded a lengthy string of genre-defining classics -- "Mon Légionnaire," "La Vie en Rose," "L'Hymne à l'Amour," "Milord," and "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" among them -

SEXY SELLS:TOM FORD Bringing Sexy Back, Again & Again

WHAT DOES SEX SMELL LIKE?

Just Ask Tom Ford.....

45 Year Old American fashion designer Tom Ford gained international fame for his legendary turnaround of the Gucci fashion house and the creation of the Tom Ford label, has become one of the world's most influential designers.

Launched in Fall 2006, Tom Ford Beauty is a luxury brand of fragrances that is comprised of: Tom Ford Black Orchid, Private Blend, a twelve-piece unisex fragrance collection, and a new men's scent, Tom Ford for Men. Each scent was designed and developed by the designer himself.

Ford's first 'Tom Ford' flagship store opened on April 12, 2007 at 845 Madison Avenue in New York City. The store carries his new, high level luxury menswear, including suits, ties, shirts, knitwear, outerwear, accessories, luggage and small leather goods. The clothing is exclusive to the Madison store and additional Tom Ford stores are planned to open in London, Milan, Tokyo and Los Angeles by the start of 2008.

While the Council of Fashion Designers of America has yet to recognize Ford's new fashion house, the likes of a nomination will be possible when the Tom Ford label broadens its designs to cover womenswear. So far he has not produced a women's fashion line....So far just Men's made-to measure

I guess Tom Ford likes men......if this editorial in OUT Magazine is any indication.
Tom Ford shot a nude boxing-themed editorial for OUT MAGAZINE with Terry Richardson.

OUT OF FASHION: THE ABSENCE OF COLOR

Bethann Hardison began her international modeling career with Willi Smith, and went on to work with Anne Klein, Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein, Perris Ellis, Issey Miyake, and Ungaro. Since her modeling days she has worked at Stephen Burrows, Valentino Couture, and Click Model Management before forming Bethann Management. In 1995, Bethann recreated the concept of the male supermodel and made fashion history by signing her client, Tyson Beckford, to an exclusive contract with designer Ralph Lauren. It was the first contract of its kind ever to be given to an African-American male model. In 1996 she ended her representation of fashion models and became co-executive producer of Between Brothers for Fox Network and more recently, co-executive producer of the syndicated television show Livin’ Large. Bethann Hardison currently maintains management for Tyson Beckford, Kadeem Hardison, and Naomi Campbell and is developing a documentary on the Black fashion model.

TURP MUSE: OUR IT GIRL. KELIS STILL WINS!!!!!

Kelis is on the cover of the latest issue of Bon a Swedish Magazine .

I LOVE KELIS!

I did a post on her last year announcing her as our it girl. And after further deliberation, we have concluded that she wins again hands down.

Their have been conflicting reports that she has a reality show coming soon. As well she has been seen around LA with a camera crew in tow......Which for whatever reason documenting her life is smart.

He's the problem though. She may be too fly for her own good. I am not so sure that mainstream America is ready for her. Unless some adjustments are made. She has a great personality. She's just kinda raw. And not in the Matrix.

Rihanna seem to be breaking through and her music is commercial for all intents and purposes. And she is swagger jacking Kelis & Beyonce at the same time.(Well Beyonce is swagger jacking Kelis too but that is a whole other subject) But Rihanna is winning with Kelis' formula. But she seems contrived.

Kelis is what she is. It is obvious. She is her own stylist. She is a tastemaker and a trendsetter. I am not sure her and Nas is a good look but I don't know him. And she likes him so I guess we gotta accept that.(Maybe I am a little jealous)

As far as her last record, I think they released the wrong singles. The song with her and Nas was not quite making it video wise. We loved "Bossy".

Everthing was right here. PURE GLAMOR!!!

She should have followed up with "I Don't Think So" and kept the Glamor coming. And serve these other chickas.

She also needs the right script. Something like Halle did in MONSTER'S BALL. That would do the trick. A movie project would let us see her expand in another light.

I wish I was her manager.......I'm just saying.

So let's just hold tight and wait for this story to unfold. And mark my word.

GETTING READ: Books To Read So That You Won't....

Book Description
“A man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.”

Any man, whether he’s american, japanese, french or whatever, who wants to be seriously well dressed, looks to the englishman’s suit for how to achieve it.”—from abc of men’s fashion

First issued in 1964, long out of print and sought after by just about everyone with an interest in classic/vintage fashion and style, The ABC of Men's Fashion by Hardy Amies is finally scheduled for a reissue in the coming weeks.

It's re-appearance is down to the V&A, which is reissuing the book as part of its Golden Age of Couture exhibition. HERE COMES THAT SOUND: ARTIST TO WATCH FOR IN 2008 Au Revoir Simone

AU REVOIR SIMONE

OMG! I LOVE THESE GIRLS. They are the NEW sexy on a whole nother tip.

This is some of the most left of centre ish I have seen & heard in a long time. Right now guys & girls that do music are trying too hard to get their different on. And in most cases it comes of contrived. Not "Au Revoir Simone". (isn't that name dope?). The band's name comes from a line Pee-Wee Herman says to a minor character (named Simone) in Tim Burton's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

Hailing from the BK. (That's in New York for all you squares) "Au Revoir Simone" are on something else. The only way I can describe their sounds is it's Tom-Tom Club meets Abba(minus the blonde hair) at the intersection of Senor Coconut & Berlin!!!
(Get your Goggle on if you don't know any of these bands).

They remind me of school teachers or librarians but sexier. They are so anti-obvious and not objectifying themselves that are they are hot! They will become what "Luscious Jackson" should have been. A blazing hot pop girl band that changes the game a little something.

Although I liked LUSCIOUS JACKSON, "Au Revoir Simone" have a pop appeal that is a hip sound from waay out! They are under the radar but I have a good feeling that MTV etc(If they are smart) we be all over this next year.

I am not really sure how this group came about. Or if it is some clever idea from some hip Downtown, Nolita, Lower Eastside, Willberg producer or the girls were just like "Hey let's get out our casio, roland, korg, alessis, rhythm ace, univox, yamaha, nord, and suzuki keyboards and drum machines. And make music that sounds like casio, roland, korg, alessis, rhythm ace, univox, yamaha, nord, and suzuki keyboards and drum machines".

Either way I am sol into "Au Revoir Simone". Can't wait for their album to come out....

P.S. You can lend and ear to "Au Revoir Simone" on their myspace page. Here's the link.

Here's a little message from Annie, Erika, and Heather....We three play keyboards and drum machines too. We'll sing you a song, a lullaby, a tune. We're from brooklyn, new york but plan to visit you. Please visit our website www.aurevoirsimone.com to buy our hand-screened cd or see what else is new in simone-land.

FASHION WATCH: DESIGNER PROFILE Gaspard Yurkievich

Gaspard Yurkievich

Description: think 80's glam with a french twist as the young designer with a bizarre surname recently opened his very own boutique in the heart of the 3rd arrondissement. about as far as conservative dresing as you'll get, think complicated details and attachments half the time [a tie here, a button there, another fastening over there] but once the clothes are on, 90 per cent of the time they look incredible.

A native of Paris, (born May 16, 1972), Gaspard Yurkievich studied at the Studio Bercot from 1991-93; wherein after graduation, he trained under Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and Jean Collona.

To hone his skills, the Paris native entered several competitions, one of them the 12th International Festival of Art and Fashion at the Hyeres (May 1997), wherein he won for the womenís collection as well as the 3 Suisse Prize. The next year (1998), Yurkievich won the ANDAM competition.

To expand his horizons in the inner workings of the fashion industry, Gaspard Yurkievich tried his hand in public relations for two years (1996-1997), organizing and preparing fashion shows, training under Isabelle Roque.

In 1998, during the Fall/Winter 1999 season, his solo collection, ìDistressedî debuted on the Paris runways. In 1999, he created special collections for La Redoubte and Prisunic/Monoprix.

Gaspard Yurkievichís creations are young, youthful and energetic. He is also not scared to take chances. His Spring 2004 menswear presentation hit the headlines because it featured several young men miming every sexual position that a group of lusty men can twist themselves into. Of course, all the models were fully clothed. But the sexual connotations were not lost on the audience.
